Since Yasmine had moved in, Sitka and Nóriel's room was an even bigger mess than usual. Nothing very surprising, considering that the set of feminine clothing, cosmetics and most of all shoes was now doubled. To Torque, it meant more smells to sort and deal with. There was Nóriel's - cattail shampoo, apple pie, old books - the one that'd send a hot, pleasant shiver down his spine and make him feel relaxed and welcome. Sitka's scent - old leather, steel, soap - was contrary to it; although they had finally shaken hands and called things even, the blonde man still smelled a little (...lottle) like a father in law who waited for Torque's mistake... Though it was more of a print from the past than an actual, occuring thing now. Yasmine's fragrance - a lilac perfume? - was still delicate, not yet imprinted on the items around, but it felt very nice... Without a hint of her sanity troubles. This room was surely somewhere she felt safe.

There also were other smells, but none was even half as strong and Torque didn't pay much attention. They were what he assumed to have been the previous inhabitants and slash or friends that would stop by sometimes. One of them, however, stood out: a blend of smoke, roast meat and old, old coins. A female, no doubt. Norrie's friend? Yasmine's? Or... Maybe Sitka was seeing someone? The very thought of betrayal made Torque frown.

"What's with that face, Rin?", Nóriel asked him as she mixed a brew in the cauldron placed between them. The substance smelled weirdly. Like chocolate and not like chocolate at the same time. And he had watched carefully, there was no chocolate in it. "No pressure, but I'd rather you focused when you have that in your hands."

The werewolf shot her an apologetic smile and looked down at the little package in his hands. The artifact, the current subject of Norrie's studies - a piece of Midas's hand - was still wrapped in the piece of cloth she had originally received it from her professor in. Torque had insisted on that he looks after it. He admired and trusted Nóriel's potionsmaking skills, but... If someone was going to be accidentally turned into a giant golden statue, he'd rather it to be himself than her.

"So... How do you say it is going to work?", he asked. Norrie had explained it once already, but the process was still a bit confusing and a mistake... Well, reasons to not make any were self explanatory.

"According to professor Helmy," Norrie started the way she tended to start half of her conversations usually, "the Midas piece is not an ingredient. If you drop it into a potion, the potion absorbs the piece's magical properties - so, turning stuff into gold - while keeping its own properties at the same time. The piece can then be reused individually or in another potion again."

Torque nodded slowly, processing the information, and lifted the package closer to his eye level.

"Does the piece absorb a potion's properties as well?", he asked. Norrie stared at him with a raised brow.

"Are you willing to risk checking that?" He had to admit, that was a bad idea. The girl shook her head and continued: "I suppose it's too powerful to... Um, accept lesser powers. Besides, it is measurable. Had it been absorbing other properties, they would all appear in our brew, too." A hint of wicked fascination appeared in her eyes. "That would be... Quite interesting."

Torque smiled, not taking eyes off her. The evil, potionsmaking, Snape version of Norrie was a relatively new sight to him; observing her was a pleasure almost as wicked as her current mood.

"Sadly, none of this is gonna happen," she said, genuinely disappointed. "All we are going to have is a growth, gold making potion."

"Growth?" It was actually the first time the man heard what was bubbling in the cauldron right now.

"Yep. I had to make one for the other course this month and I had some leftover ingredients." Having said that, she took a fistful of leaves and just threw them in; they were followed by another fistful of small, soil-scented roots. They were, however, carefully dipped, one by one, in the brew. "Besides, I'm quite interested in what will be faster. I mean, how much will my specimen grow before it turns solid gold. Or if turning solid will affect or stop the growth at all."

The werewolf smiled again.

"You are so curious."

"Some call it crazy, you know."

"Not me."

Nóriel smiled back at him. A moment of silence fell between them, as the roots were slowly disappearing in the thick brew. Suddenly, the man noticed a new smell. No, wait. It wasn't new... Smoke, meat, coins. The girl. And she was approaching the room with an inhumane speed.

"SITKAAAAA!", she yelled enthusiastically, storming through the door as if it was just an ordinary door and not a magical one that only let in certain people. Apparently, it considered her close to an inhabitant. "I want beer, let's have beer!", she kept yelling, presenting a giant bucket of hot, steamy liquid. Scentless. Water. Torque knew exactly what it meant - and so did Norrie who hid behind him with a sharp squeal.

"Dammit, Ruby! NO!", she exclaimed from behind her improvised fortress. "You're NOT doing it again!"

"Sorry, lovedoves," the other girl - Ruby, apparently - answered, though her expression didn't seem apologetic at all. "I need Sitka. A matter of life and death. C'mon, be a good girl- -"

"We're kind of busy here," Torque interrupted, reaching out behind himself to shield Norrie better. Ruby stared at him.

"Busy? Busy how? You're not even half naked- -" She stopped mid-sentence, only noticing the cauldron now. "Ooooh!"

"Yeah, I know there's only one kind of busy in your book," - Ruby only grinned at that shamelessly - "but I'm doing important homework here, so don't you dare throw that water at me," Nóriel warned. The newcomer only scoffed.

"Homework? Man, are you boring..."

"It involves gold."

"...then why aren't you done yet?!", she exclaimed and threw herself in the cauldron's direction, stuck her nose in the thick smoke and frowned. "...this ain't gold."

"No, but it will change things into gold." Norrie mixed the brew and reached out for the package with the Midas piece in it. "In just a minute."

"Okay," Ruby answered and sat on the bed. "You got me interested."

"I'd rather do it myself," Torque said gently and started unwrapping the piece. Ruby didn't comment, although she looked like she really wanted to. Nóriel rolled her eyes.

"Fine. But use protective gloves."

The brew was done and ready for usage. With watermancy, Nóriel took out some of the hot water from her dragon colleague's bucket and extinguished the fire, then started cooling the cauldron down by wrapping a layer of water tightly around it. The cauldron responded with a loud hiss. At the sign given by the girl, with his hands secured, Torque dropped the artifact into the potion. It turned its colour to golden almost immediately.

"Is it gold yet?"

"No. But it will be," Norrie answered. With watermancy again, she transferred some of the potion into a spray container. "There. We can now test it."

"Why doesn't the container change into gold?", Torque asked in unhidden surprise.

"Oh, no no no. It's hexed. It won't be affected by anything it contains." Zee, Norrie and Sitka's good friend and a brother in law of sorts, was loud and chaotic maybe... But yet, he was quite a skilled bastard when it was coming to hexes.

"...why aren't we hexed then?" Norrie glanced at her partner uneasily.

"Because... I like the thrill, okay?" She quickly looked around for a potential victim and to perhaps change the subject. Her eyes stopped at a pot plant, and so did her hands a few seconds later. "Sorry, little nerd. You were in the wrong girl's room at a wrong time."

The plant was set, the three students stood around it like three predators around their prey. The victim stayed calm, unaware of its planned fate, not suspecting a single bad thing that was about to happen to it. The spray was used; Torque observed it with polite interest, Norrie with growing fascination and Ruby - with badly hidden excitement. In a matter of seconds, the plant became bigger and bigger, its leaves growing instantly, the rhizomes almost reaching the floor. Then, in a blink of an eye, the rich green colour turned into pure gold.

Ruby blinked.

"So... Is it gold now?" Norrie nodded, satisfied.

"Yes."

A tiny moment of silence passed.

"DIBS!", the dragon girl yelled, snatched the plant and the spray with one sudden move and sprang out of the room. The other two students looked at each other.

"...experiment successful," Norrie summed up and moved on to storing the rest of the potion.

I still giggle at the ruby lurking in the background like "I smell shiny!"
